The SENDAI Pageant of Light was created in 1986 with the hopes of "brightening up Sendai in winter" and "transforming the City of Trees into a City of Light." The zelkova trees on the Jozenji-dori Avenue, the main street that represents the City of Trees, will be illuminated. It is loved by both locals and tourists as a wintertime tradition in Sendai that creates a fantastic world.
The event is held from the beginning of December to the end of the year, with a different theme each year, and creates a spectacular world of light by using approximately 450,000 LED lights on 115 zelkova trees.
During the SENDAI Pageant of Starlight, various events unfold in the area around Kotodai Park and the Civic Plaza. Hüttes (small huts) are set up, hosting a charming Christmas market. In addition, a variety of performers showcase their street acts. The illumination lights envelop the area, offering a multitude of delightful experiences, which is a major draw for visitors.
