Omi Bridge
An arch-shaped beautiful bridge that blends seamlessly with the scenery of Lake Biwa.
The Omi Bridge, spanning Lake Biwa, connects Marunouchi-cho in Otsu City and Shinhamacho in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Opened in 1974, it was originally a toll road but became toll-free in 2013. Along with the Biwako Ohashi Bridge, which connects Otsu City and Moriyama City, Omi Bridge is one of two bridges over Lake Biwa.
The bridge stretches 1,290 meters in length and stands about 12 meters above the lake, offering a design that harmoniously blends with the lake's scenery. Its gentle arch shape, combined with the surrounding greenery, weaves a picturesque view of Lake Biwa. The silhouette of the bridge set against the evening sunset is particularly stunning.
A section of the bridge is designed to lift for the passage of ships, providing an excellent vantage point for views across Lake Biwa. It's a popular route for both drivers and cyclists (a part of the "Biwaichi" cycling route) and can be crossed by vehicles, bicycles, and on foot, taking about 15 minutes to walk across. On clear days, it's also a favorite spot for jogging enthusiasts.
*Note: "Biwaichi" refers to cycling around Lake Biwa or touring the various tourist spots and scenic areas in the prefecture using bicycles.
