Akayama Observatory offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Taketomi Island. Its unique design makes use of the rooftop of a renovated private house, and it has grown in popularity as the successor to the beloved Nagomi-no-Tō, a symbolic observatory that was closed in 2016 due to aging.
Located in the center of Taketomi’s Nishimee District, just a short walk from the former Nagomi-no-Tō, the observatory provides stunning views of the traditional Okinawan landscape with rows of red-tiled houses. Unusual for Taketomi, the two-story building was even used as the set for a drama (though it cannot actually be used as an inn).
Admission is 100 yen per person. A small payment box topped with a cute shisa statue sits at the entrance—simply place your fee there before entering. Climb the stairs to the rooftop deck and enjoy unobstructed views, the refreshing island breeze, and a peaceful, slow-paced moment on Taketomi Island.
