The Sumida River Fireworks Festival, one of the largest in Japan, is held annually on the last Saturday of July. Its history dates back to the Edo period when the eighth shogun, Yoshimune, held a water god festival and launched fireworks to console the spirits of those who died during a great famine and to pray for the end of the epidemic.
At the first venue, you can enjoy the opening fireworks, where over 1,000 continuous star mines are launched. Moreover, one of the attractions is the fireworks competition held by top-class Japanese pyrotechnicians. At the second venue, an even larger number of powerful fireworks are launched, providing a thrilling spectacle.
Viewing the fireworks from luxurious houseboats and cruise ships on the Sumida River, which offer views of both venues, is also popular. A special plan to watch the fireworks from the observation deck of the Tokyo Skytree is also scheduled.
