Nakano Broadway

Opened in 1966 as Japan's first commercial-residential complex, Nakano Broadway has since transformed into a hub with over 200 shops across five floors, from the basement to the fourth floor. It features a unique blend of original shopping street-style stores and subculture-related shops.

The shift to its current style, a mixture of traditional stores and subculture-oriented shops, began in the 1980s. It was sparked by the opening of the manga specialty secondhand bookstore "Mandarake" in 1980. Subsequently, numerous shops catering to niche hobbies like books, figurines, cards, and mini-cars opened, attracting a dedicated fanbase. Unlike Akihabara, which targets a broader customer base, Nakano Broadway is known for its rarer assortment of goods, earning a reputation as a "sanctuary of subculture."

In addition to subculture-related shops, the area is also a battleground for over 20 luxury watch stores, contributing to its high international fame. Many foreign tourists list it as a must-visit destination in Japan.
