Senba Toshogu

Among the Toshogu shrines dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu across the country, Senba Toshogu is considered one of the three great Toshogu shrines, alongside Nikko Toshogu, where Ieyasu's remains rest, and Kunozan Toshogu, the first of its kind. It was established in 1633 (the 10th year of the Kan'ei era), following a four-day memorial service held by the high priest Tenkai at the adjacent Kita-in Temple during the transfer of Ieyasu's remains.

The brilliantly colored main hall, Karamon gate, Zuijin gate, worship hall, offering hall, accompanying gate, and stone torii gate are all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The intricate three-dimensional designs found throughout the buildings captivate visitors. In front of the main hall, 26 stone lanterns donated by successive lords of Kawagoe line up, similar to other Toshogu shrines across the country.

Believed to bring success in life and business prosperity, the shrine grounds also offer auspicious foods such as "Kaiun Dango" and "Shusse Miso Oden." Known as a spot for autumn foliage, the path from the entrance to the worship hall is beautifully colored in autumn hues during the season.
