Located within the grounds of Nakayama Kumano Shrine in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Nakayama Wisteria is a stunning wisteria trellis estimated to be around 300 years old. Designated as a Natural Monument of the prefecture, the trellis spans approximately 350 tsubo (1,155 square meters) and blooms every spring like a magnificent curtain of purple. Its sweet fragrance and enchanting atmosphere transport visitors to another world.

From mid to late April, during the peak bloom period, the annual Nakayama Wisteria Festival takes place. Visitors can enjoy a variety of events, including jazz performances and the sale of local specialties, all while basking in the serene beauty under the wisteria canopy.

The nighttime illumination, scheduled from dusk to 9 PM, is a must-see. The wisteria blossoms, bathed in light, create a romantic and magical ambiance distinct from their daytime beauty.

Nearby, Miyama City’s Shimizuyama Peony Garden showcases 2,500 peony bushes of 80 varieties in full bloom during the same season. A free shuttle bus connects the two spots, making it easy to explore both. Plan a visit to Nakayama Wisteria and Shimizuyama Peony Garden to experience the breathtaking colors of Fukuoka’s spring.
