A historic temple founded in 1550, this sub-temple of Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto enshrines a valuable statue of Bishamonten as its principal deity. The statue is believed to date from the late Heian period and is said to have long been kept in the ceiling space of Tofukuji Temple’s Buddha Hall. It is usually closed to the public, but can be viewed during special opening periods in the New Year season and autumn.

With the hope of making the temple feel more familiar and approachable, it offers a variety of experiences and attractions, including hanachozu, seasonal goshuin, and zazen meditation. Hanachozu refers to the temple’s purification pavilion decorated with seasonal flowers and items, and it is especially popular as a photo spot. The temple also offers a wide selection of goshuin featuring seasonal limited-edition motifs, so each visit can feel fresh and different.

Experiences such as zazen meditation, sutra copying, and Buddhist image tracing are also available, and are well regarded as a chance to spend a peaceful, calming moment in quiet surroundings. These experiences are offered daily, with options that combine zazen and yoga, as well as matcha and traditional fresh sweets. All experiences must be reserved in advance through the official website.
