A forest oasis surrounded by wind and trees, where you can feel the spirit of the Sapporo Winter Olympics.

Supervised by :  Hokkaido Makomanai Park

About 8 km south of central Sapporo, this expansive urban park covers approx. 85 hectares, making it one of the city’s largest. Originally the main venue for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, the area still operates skating rinks in winter at Makomanai Sekisui Heim Ice Arena and Makomanai Sekisui Heim Stadium, and you can feel the atmosphere where athletes from around the world once competed.

Although it sits in an urban area with easy access by public transportation, the park is known for its grand natural scenery, especially as a famous spot for cherry blossoms and fall foliage. In spring, alongside its well-known dogtooth violets, approx. 1,000 cherry trees planted throughout the park bloom at once; in fall, maples and other trees turn vivid colors. In winter, when the park is blanketed in snow, visitors can also enjoy snow activities with their own sleds, walking skis, or snowshoes.

During a trip to Sapporo, it is a great place to step away from the city bustle and observe wild birds and seasonal plants, relax with forest bathing, or get active by running the 3 km course inside the park.
