Cape Muroto
A cape at the southeastern tip of Shikoku offering magnificent views, unusual rock formations, and diverse plant life.
Located at the southeastern tip of Shikoku, this striking inverted-triangle-shaped cape extends into the Pacific Ocean. Its magnificent natural features include marine terraces formed by tectonic uplift and sea-level changes, as well as subtropical forests nurtured by the warm climate. It was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2011.
The sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean is breathtaking. A walking trail extends for about 2 km around the tip of the cape, offering visitors a chance to explore the area's rich natural surroundings. The many unusual formations, including Bishago Rock and Eboshi Rock, were formed by undersea volcanic activity about 14 million years ago and are designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Subtropical and coastal plants, including Chinese banyan and ubame oak trees, are also designated a National Natural Monument.
The area around the cape has plenty to see, including caves and a pond where the young Kobo Daishi is said to have stayed, trained, and performed ritual bathing, as well as a statue of Nakaoka Shintaro, one of the key figures behind the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance. An observation deck overlooking the picturesque horizon has been designated a “Lover's Sanctuary.”
