Opened in 1993, the Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art is one of the prefecture’s leading art museums. Beyond exhibitions, it also presents a wide range of cultural programs, including performing arts and film.

The building is also notable for incorporating local traditional materials such as Tosa plaster and Tosa roof tiles. Inside, in addition to exhibition rooms, it includes a hall with a movable Noh stage and a prefectural gallery.

The collection includes more than 42,000 works by approx. 440 artists from Japan and abroad. In particular, its collection of five oil paintings and approx. 1,200 prints by the world-renowned artist Marc Chagall is highly regarded internationally and stands as one of the museum’s signature holdings.

The museum also holds an extensive collection of works and materials by Kochi-related photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto, along with strong holdings of German Expressionism and works by artists connected to Kochi Prefecture.
