Godaisan (Godaisan Park)
One of the city’s best viewpoints, packed with sightseeing highlights.
Spreading across Mount Godaisan in southeastern Kochi City, this park is a beloved place for locals to relax. Known for its azaleas, it fills with delicate, vivid blooms in season. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal flowers year-round, including cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and camellias.
It is also famous as one of the city’s top viewpoints, with a stunning panorama of downtown Kochi and the waters of Urado Bay stretching out below. The view lets you experience the unique geography of Kochi, where the city center and the sea sit remarkably close together. The scenery from the observation terrace installed in 2022 is also excellent.
At the summit stands Chikurinji Temple, said to have been founded in 724, the first year of the Jinki era, by the monk Gyoki at the imperial request of Emperor Shomu. Designated as Temple No. 31 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, it welcomes many worshippers throughout the year. Other highlights are scattered throughout the area, including the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden and memorial facilities, built to honor the achievements of Dr. Tomitaro Makino, a world-renowned botanist who was the first in Japan to give scientific names to plants.
