Shibamata Taishakuten Daikyo-ji Temple is Shibamata's most iconic temple and an important place of worship for local residents. Founded in 1629, one of the temple's most appealing features is its exquisite wood carvings. A closer look reveals many remarkably lifelike works. After walking along the quaint approach to the temple, the bustle of central Tokyo gives way to the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional shitamachi neighborhood. Shibamata was also made famous by the movie series Otoko wa Tsurai yo, so come here to worship, take a stroll, and experience its strong shitamachi character.

When you visit Shibamata, besides strolling the old street, you should definitely stop by Shibamata Taishakuten too.

Passing through the Nitenmon Gate feels like stepping back in time. One of the reasons I love visiting temples in Japan is for these quiet, peaceful moments. Whether you join in the traditional prayer rituals or simply take in the atmosphere, it’s all wonderful.

Once you leave Shibamata Station, you walk through the old street and you'll get there in no time.

This temple belongs to the Nichiren sect. Many people come here to pray for good luck and safety. The architecture is really beautiful and unique—definitely worth a visit.

I passed by Shibamata a couple of days ago and stopped by the temple. It was so quiet with hardly anyone around...

This is a very old temple with a lot of history. The carvings on the beams are worth checking out. Since I visited on a weekday, it wasn’t crowded and there weren’t any foreign tourists. Compared to Senso-ji, this place feels much more relaxing.

I visited my favorite old Tokyo neighborhood, Shibamata, again today and had an exciting and fulfilling day. At Shibamata Taishakuten Daikyo-ji, I checked out the carving gallery and the Japanese garden inside. The old shops along the approach to the temple are so much fun to explore. If you want to experience the everyday life of old Tokyo, I highly recommend this place.

This is a charming, traditional Japanese temple. It's not very big, so you can see everything without spending too much time. I love the peaceful and relaxing vibe here. You can pray without too many distractions.

After walking straight down the old street, you'll soon see the Niomon Gate of Taishakuten Temple. To enter the main hall for worship, you need to take off your shoes. There's also a Japanese garden called Suikeien at the back. It's not very big, but it's a traditional Japanese building. Sitting inside and looking out at the garden feels so peaceful and quiet. The intricate carvings around the Taishakudo are truly impressive and worth seeing.

This is the hometown of Ryotsu from KochiKame! It still has a traditional vibe and there aren't too many foreign tourists yet, so it hasn't become overly commercialized. You can really feel the simple and unpretentious atmosphere of a Japanese temple here.
