Inside the shrine, you can see the chozuya purification pavilion, which has a deeply sacred atmosphere and allows worshippers to wash their hands and purify themselves before entering the sacred grounds. The vivid vermilion main hall looks even more striking against the blue sky and surrounding tropical plants. Aoshima Shrine is famous for prayers for good relationships, matchmaking, and safe travel by land and sea. The grounds are also filled with prayer plaques and a variety of distinctive charms, making it an extremely popular matchmaking shrine and photo spot that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Miyazaki!

Aoshima Shrine is a must-visit when you come to Miyazaki. What’s special is that you have to cross a bridge to reach the shrine. You need to be very careful at high tide, or the waves crashing onto the shore will get you wet. It’s really exciting. The shrine is hidden in a jungle of tropical and subtropical plants, giving it a very unique atmosphere. It’s definitely worth spending half a day walking around.

Follow the hidden path through the subtropical forest to the back, where a powerful sacred tree called the “Married Camphor Trees” stands tall. After praying, tie one of the five-colored strings representing your wish beside the tree, symbolizing a prayer for a good match and for your wish to come true.

If you're not driving, I recommend checking the bus schedule in advance so you can easily visit the nearby coastal attractions. Before going, I happened to eat at たまごのたまこ, and I still can't forget its signature chicken nanban—crispy outside, tender inside, and covered in sweet-and-sour tartar sauce. I never expected it to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It closed this year, which is such a shame!
