Tanga Market is full of local charm and a great place to experience everyday life and culture in Kitakyushu. The market has all kinds of fresh seafood, prepared foods, snacks, and unique shops, and it’s really fun to walk around and eat as you go. The vendors are very friendly, and the prices are reasonable. It’s a great spot to take your time and soak up the local atmosphere.

I visited recently and the market itself had a great nostalgic vibe, but the long-established shop Akakabe was honestly disappointing. The owner was unfriendly, and when I asked if I could borrow a chair because the wife, who seemed drunk, was sitting on the floor, I was refused. Even after consulting with the association and asking again, they just insisted, 'We're a standing bar, not a restaurant, so we can't lend you a chair.' I get the rules, but it just didn't make sense to me as a person.

It's ridiculous that this shop is even featured in the media. According to the association, they smile for the media and YouTubers. The shop itself is nice, but the owner ruins everything. I wish they'd get a new owner.

Tanga Market really has that traditional market vibe! Highly recommend checking it out—you can really experience what it's like for locals to shop here. 👍
