This place is so beautiful, especially in winter. The snow in the background against the blue sky and white clouds looks like a painting. It looks gorgeous in photos even without a filter. There's also a shop nearby selling exclusive lake monster dolls that are only available here. Super cute~

For this trip, we drove from Lake Akan to Lake Kussharo. The scenery along the way was very pleasant, with mountains, forests, and lakes coming together to create the natural atmosphere unique to eastern Hokkaido.

Lake Kussharo is Japan's largest caldera lake. Its vast waters are surrounded by mountains and forests, and standing by the shore looking out over the expansive lake really makes you want to slow down.

That's the beauty of Hokkaido. You don't necessarily need any special attractions—just driving and enjoying the scenery along the way is already very soothing.

This Lake Akan → Lake Kussharo route is really worth including in your itinerary!

If it’s your first time at Lake Kussharo, you have to check out Sunayu! Just dig into the sand by the lake a few times, and hot spring water actually bubbles up. It felt like magic!

Soaking my feet in a natural foot bath I dug myself while relaxing by the lake was incredibly soothing. It’s such a unique experience—not only great for photos, but also a lot of fun. Highly recommend adding it to your Hokkaido itinerary!

Lake Kussharo is freezing in winter, but it’s so worth it. The whole row of snowy mountains across the way with the white clouds really looked like a painting! There were so many swans on the lake, and you could see them up close right from the shore. The scenery was a perfect 10.

The vibe is totally different in winter. The steamy spots along the shore look pretty magical.

If you dig into the sandy beach along Lake Kussharo, you'll find warm hot spring water bubbling up! It's such a unique experience, so definitely check out the 'Sunayu' area if you visit!

The beach at Lake Kussharo is full of people digging in the sand because you can find warm hot spring water underneath. I also saw people camping here—summer seems like the perfect time for it! It's a bit of a shame we're just tourists, because camping here would be such a treat.

If you dig in the sand at the beach, you'll find natural hot springs bubbling up! There's also a free foot bath nearby where you can soak your feet. In winter, you can relax in the foot bath while watching swans that have flown in all the way from Siberia. Such a unique experience!
