Resort Shirakami

A sightseeing train that runs from Akita Station to Hirosaki Station and Aomori Station via the JR Gonō Line. From the windows, you can enjoy spectacular views of Shirakami-Sanchi, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and the Sea of Japan. Since its debut in 1997, it has continued to captivate many visitors. Three train sets are in service: Buna, Aoike, and Kumagera. The green Buna train is inspired by the primeval beech forests of Shirakami-Sanchi.

I rode the Resort Shirakami from Akita to Hirosaki, and that day it was the Buna train.
True to its name, the interior was designed mainly with wood from Akita and Aomori, which gave it a warm, inviting feel.
As the train rolled along, I enjoyed the changing views of the Sea of Japan. We also stopped at Noshiro Station, where you can get off and try a basketball shot.
It’s a sightseeing train that really blends in a lot of local character.

Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport)

Haneda is Japan’s largest airport, officially called Tokyo International Airport. Each of the three terminals has an observation deck where you can watch closely the airplanes take off and land, shopping facility, and restaurants with different cuisines.

Since the Edo period, Nihonbashi has been the starting point for journeys. There is also a Nihonbashi Bridge inside Haneda Airport, and when you step onto it and look out over the entire airport, it feels as if the past and the present are crossing in the same moment.

On top of that, Haneda Airport is also one of the best airports in Japan for shopping. The domestic terminal in particular has famous souvenirs from all over the country, and even Haneda Airport exclusive items. It’s worth making a special trip here even if you’re not catching a flight.

Taito Ward Sumida Park

This park in Taito Ward extends along the western bank of the Sumida River. On the other hand, the park that extends along the eastern bank is the Sumida Ward Sumida Park. In this park, which boasts a site of over 10 hectares, many cherry trees are planted centered around the "Sakura Square".

Taking a walk through Sumida Park at night, I came across Tokyo Skytree.
Choosing to stay in Asakusa was really a great decision. Besides visiting Senso-ji at night, you can also stroll through Sumida Park and admire the view of Tokyo Skytree by the river. It’s the most beautiful sight.

Sensoji Temple

This iconic destination in Asakusa sees as many as 30 million visitors each year. It stands as a well-loved mainstay in Tokyo, all while hosting a number of annual traditions like the first temple visit at New Years, Setsubun and more across the year.

If you're visiting Tokyo, I highly recommend staying in Asakusa. You can appreciate a different side of Sensoji Temple there.

In the early morning, before the tourists arrive, you can visit and pray at a relaxed pace. At night, after the crowds have gone, it's completely different from the daytime bustle. Sensoji Temple has a quiet, wabi-sabi kind of beauty in the evening.

MUJI Ginza

The world flagship store is located along Namiki-dori Avenue in Ginza, an upscale shopping area in Tokyo. Here, visitors can experience MUJI's concept of proposing "sensible living" in all aspects of clothing, food, and housing from various angles.

This place is great for browsing, especially with the restaurant in B1. It’s different from the Cafe&Meal locations we have in Taiwan.

At the MUJI diner in Ginza, dinner is served as a set meal, with dishes that are both healthy and delicious. Next time you’re in Ginza, definitely consider stopping by MUJI diner for dinner!

Shibamata Taishakuten Daikyo-ji Temple

The official name of Shibamata Taishakuten is “Kyoeizan Daikyo-ji.” It is a temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, and as it was built in 1629 it has quite the long history.

When you visit Shibamata, besides strolling the old street, you should definitely stop by Shibamata Taishakuten too.
Passing through the Nitenmon Gate feels like stepping back in time. One of the reasons I love visiting temples in Japan is for these quiet, peaceful moments. Whether you join in the traditional prayer rituals or simply take in the atmosphere, it’s all wonderful.

Tsukishima Nishinaka-Dori

Tsukishima is a relatively new city, established on reclaimed land next to Tokyo Bay between 1882 and 1893. Tsukishima Nishinaka-Dori runs through the center of the city, and it is also a popular tourist stop known as “Monja Street.” Presently, you can find around 85 monjayaki restaurants here.

Tsukishima Nishinaka-Dori is basically a whole street dedicated to monjayaki, where you can try this classic Tokyo shitamachi dish.
We visited the famous restaurant Moheji. Seating inside is limited, so if you don’t book ahead, you might not get the chance to try their delicious monjayaki!
We ordered their signature mentaiko mochi monjayaki. It was fun watching the staff cook it, and the amazing aroma kept drifting up from the griddle and making us even hungrier. Every bite was packed with mentaiko, and it turned out to be such a unique dining experience. If you have the chance, I definitely recommend trying monjayaki in Tsukishima during your trip to Tokyo!

There’s never enough time whenever I go to First Avenue Tokyo Station!
There are even more shops now in Character Street, and Tokyo Okashi Land has gotten even better!
They’ve got limited-edition items from favorite brands like Glico, Calbee, Kameda Seika, and Morinaga. If I’d had more time, I definitely would’ve wanted to try the freshly made Happy Turn!

The Maple Mania: "Maple Butter Cookie"

"The Maple Mania" is a dessert brand that offers sweets made with maple sugar, including financiers, pie sandwiches, and baumkuchen. The "Maple Butter Cookie" has been the brand's number one best-seller and has been beloved for over 10 years since its inception.

As soon as you open the package, you get a rich maple aroma. The crispy cookies are filled with cream, and they do run on the sweet side. Overall, it’s basically a maple version of Shiroi Koibito.

Kohfukuji Temple

This temple was first built as a private residence of Fujiwara no Kamatari in Yamashina-suehara of Yamashiro-no-kuni (current Kyoto prefecture) and named Yamashina-dera, and later, Fujiwara no Fuhito decided to relocate to the current place at the time of the establishment of the Heijo Ⅽapital in 710, and the temple was renamed Kohfukuji.

In the ancient city of Nara, one bright vermilion building really stands out. After looking it up and learning about the history of the Central Golden Hall, I appreciated even more how remarkable it is.

Although there is an admission fee, I think it’s well worth it.
