Yasaka Koshindo

A temple built in a famous tourists spot in Kyoto called Higashiyama, where other famous sights such as the Kiyomizu Temple and Yasaka Shrine are located. The official name of the temple is "Daikokusan Kongoji Koshindo,” but is well-known as "Yasaka Koshin-san" in the local area. It is said that this was where the Koshin faith, which derived from Chinese Taoism, first started in Japan, and is also one of the three Koshin in Japan.

Although Yasaka Koshindo is not very large, it is full of traditional Kyoto charm. The colorful kukurizaru wish dolls inside the temple are very eye-catching, filling the entire space with warmth and energy. Writing down a wish by hand and praying for peace and good fortune also adds a sense of ceremony to the trip. Stopping by while strolling through the streets of Higashiyama lets you not only enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the ancient capital, but also take beautiful photos with a distinctly Kyoto feel!

Located in Nagoya, Atsuta Houraiken Main Store was founded in 1873 and is one of the city’s most iconic places to try hitsumabushi. The fresh eel is carefully grilled over charcoal, giving it crispy skin and tender meat. Its rich aroma pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s secret sauce, which has been passed down for generations without being overly sweet.

The highlight of hitsumabushi is enjoying it three ways: first on its own, then with toppings like green onions and wasabi, and finally with broth poured over it, ochazuke-style. Each preparation brings out a different flavor.

A steel tower which looks like the Eiffel Tower and 75 meters high was built In 1912, on top of a building which was the motif of the Arc de Triomphe, and named “Tsutenkaku” meaning “A building reaching the heaven'' by Nangaku Fujisawa, a Confucian in the early Meiji period. After being broken down due to a fire, citizens lobbied for rebuilding and the current 2nd Tsutenkaku was built in 1956.

This shrine is the headquarters of Kurama Koukyou, a sect of Buddihsm. In 770 AD, saint monk, Gantei, who was also a disciple of Ganjin, the founder of Toshodaiji Temple, enshrined Bishamonten (guardian god of Buddhism), and this is the origin of this temple. In the golden head hall, statues of Bishamonten No, Senju-Kannon Bosatsu, and Goho Maoson are enshrined.

Weathercock House

Famed for the weathercock perched atop its spire, this residence is one of the signature Western-style houses of the area. Built around 1909 by German trader Gottfried Thomas as his personal home, it is the only surviving ijinkan in the Kitano-Yamamoto district featuring a brick exterior. The vivid brickwork, the stone-masonry entrance porch, and the half-timbering on the second floor give the house a stately presence that sets it apart from other ijinkan.
