Lake Suwa, located in the center of Nagano Prefecture, is the largest lake in Shinshu with a circumference of about 16 km. The lakeside is rich in nature and is well maintained, so you can enjoy strolling or jogging while looking at the beautiful nature. There are also many sightseeing spots in the vicinity, where you can enjoy art at museums, soak in hot springs with a view of Suwa Lake, and many other things.
There are also popular activities such as pleasure cruises, boating, and in winter, wakasagi fishing. If you take a cruise ship circling the large Suwa Lake, you can enjoy a spectacular view from the lake. Kirigamine and Yatsugatake can be seen in the far distance, and if the weather is good, you can even see Mt. Fuji.
In winter, the lake is completely frozen over, and when conditions are right, such as a cold spell of about 10 degrees Celsius for several days, a mysterious natural phenomenon called "Omi-watari" can be seen, in which the ice on the surface of the lake rises like a mountain range with a loud sound.
