National Crafts Museum
Visitors will be exposed to numerous masterpieces at Japan's only national museum specializing in crafts and design.
In October 2020, the Crafts Gallery of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, which had been located in Kitanomaru on the banks of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, relocated and opened in Kanazawa, the "City of Arts and Crafts".
The museum is the only national museum in Japan specializing in crafts and design, and houses approximately 4,000 works in various fields, including ceramics, glass, lacquerware, wood, bamboo, dyeing and weaving, metalwork, dolls, and design.
It is rare for an art museum to have such a broad collection of modern crafts and design, and its valuable collection is the best in Japan.
The museum is working to enhance its collection systematically as a source of modern and contemporary crafts in Japan.
The building was built in the late Meiji period (1868-1912) and registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1997. It is a reconstruction and utilization of a wooden former army facility, the "Former Army 9th Division Headquarters Building" and the "Former Army Kanazawa Kaikosha," which was originally a social hall for officers.
The exhibition rooms were reconstructed using reinforced concrete construction, and the exterior of the building is reproduced in the colors used at the time of construction.
From time to time, exhibitions of works from the collection, special exhibitions, or co-sponsored exhibitions are held.
Lectures and other events are also held in conjunction with each theme.
