Hotel Koo Otsu Hyakucho

Hotel Koo Otsu Hyakucho has opened with the concept of “stay, eat, drink, and shop at a town.” Unique “shotengai” hotels (shopping street hotel) are located in seven renovated machiya residences standing over 100 years in the Otsu City center. In 2016, Mr. Taniguchi, the representative of Taniguchi Construction, a wooden custom home builder based in Ryuo Town, Shiga Prefecture, wanted to preserve the townhouses of Otsu. He consulted with Mr. Iwasa, the representative of Jiyujin Corporation, the publisher of the magazine "Jiyujin" and the operator of the hot spring inn "Satoyama Jujo" in Minami Uonuma, Niigata. This led to the birth of the "shopping Street Hotel Project".

The Ohmiya house where its central reception desk is located and the Chaya house with an exclusive lounge space both face the Old Tokaido Road. There are eight rooms in total in these two buildings. In addition, five other separate houses can be rented individually. Especially, the Maruya, Yorozuya, and Suzuya houses are located in the covered shopping street giving you a feeling living inside the shopping street.

All rooms are furnished with top brand tables and chairs by Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and other designers, making for luxurious and comfortable rooms. As the hotel’s concept is one of “living in the town”, dinner is usually not served. Guests can dine in a neighborhood eatery on the shopping street. Although, breakfast can be served in the Ohmiya house (advance reservation required).
