Shinobazu Pond, a natural pond spanning about 2 kilometers in circumference, is situated at the southern end of Ueno Park, Japan's first urban park covering an extensive area of about 530,000 square meters. The name "Shinobazu Pond" is said to originate from the area once known as Shinobazu Hill, located between the Ueno and Hongo plateaus (there are various theories).

The pond is divided into three sections: the "Boat Pond," offering rental boats such as rowboats and swan boats (for a fee), the "Lotus Pond," which is beautiful with lotus flowers blooming from early July to late August, and "Cormorant Pond" within Ueno Zoo. The "Nakajima" island, where all three ponds meet, features the Shinobazu Bentendou with an octagonal hall, allowing worship from anywhere around the pond.

The park, an oasis amidst the city surrounded by rich nature, is particularly famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot. The cherry tree-lined paths around Shinobazu Pond are perfect for strolls, and boat rides on the pond offer a unique cherry blossom viewing experience.
