Otaru Art Base Stained Glass Museum

A mesmerizing space showcasing rare church stained glass artworks.

Last update :

One of the four museums within Otaru Art Base, the Stained Glass Museum showcases approximately 100 stained glass pieces created in Britain between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which once adorned church windows.

A key highlight of this museum is its rare collection of church stained glass. In recent years, many churches in Britain have been demolished for various reasons, leading to the loss of countless stained glass artworks. However, some pieces were preserved by art dealers, and a fortunate selection has made its way across the seas, now on display in Otaru after over a century.

The museum is housed in two historic buildings, the former Takahashi Warehouse and the former Arata Trading Company, both designated as historically significant by Otaru City. Constructed using a fire-resistant "wood-frame stone" structure, the dimly lit interiors enhance the contrast between the darkness and the light filtering through the stained glass, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere. Visitors can immerse themselves in the historic charm of the building while appreciating the interplay of light and shadow that brings these stained glass masterpieces to life.
