Kairakuen
Enjoy Kumamoto’s soul food, Taipien, at the restaurant where it originated.
If you’re visiting Kumamoto, one must-stop spot is the long-established Chinese restaurant Kairakuen. It’s known as the birthplace of Kumamoto’s local specialty, Taipien, and has been serving it since 1933. In Kumamoto, it’s even served in school lunches, and it’s widely known nationwide as a local soul food.
Taipien is a healthy dish topped with plenty of napa cabbage, slightly thicker glass noodles, springy shrimp, and fried boiled egg. Its signature is a mellow chicken-stock-based soup that hasn’t changed since the menu item was first created. One bite and its gentle flavors spread through your mouth. There are also set menus that include Chinese rice porridge or fried rice, aromatic fried chicken, and dessert, making for a satisfyingly filling meal.
Located in central Kumamoto City, it’s easy to stop by between sightseeing. With plenty of nearby attractions like Kumamoto Castle and the Contemporary Art Museum, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy local flavors while exploring.
Expect lines at lunchtime, so it’s best to visit with extra time. Dinner is reservation-only, and only course meals are served.
