Last update :

Located in the heart of Kumamoto City and stretching from Toricho-suji in a north-south direction, Shimotori Shopping Arcade is bustling with local customers and tourists both day and night. Easily accessible by tram and bus, and in close proximity to JR Kumamoto Station, the arcade is also within walking distance to Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's three most famous castles and a symbol of Kumamoto.

Comprising four shopping streets – Shin-Tencho, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, and 4th Street – the arcade is 511 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 16 meters high, making it the largest in Kyushu. It hosts a variety of shops including COCOSA, a commercial facility with many Kyushu and Kumamoto debut brands, as well as diverse dining options ranging from cafes to local cuisine. Approximately 170 varied stores line the arcade.

Seasonal events are also held in the arcade, such as "Higo's Hina Matsuri" in late February to early March, where Hina dolls are displayed throughout, and "Higo no Tsuri Temari" in November, featuring colorful Higo handballs swaying in the wind, showcasing Kumamoto's traditional culture.
