On the northside of Kumamoto Castle you’ll find a spot sharing all the deep traditions of Kumamoto Prefecture’s historic handicrafts. Through displays of authentic, artisan folkcrafts, shopping experiences and hands-on events, this museum has been keeping the art traditions apart of daily life today since it opened in 1982.
At the 2nd floor permanent exhibit you’ll find displays of the many different artisan folkcrafts that hail from all across Kumamoto. From Higo-Zogan inlay and Shodaiware ceramics to Amakusa pottery, Yamaga Toro lanterns and more, there’s close to 90 different historic handicraft traditions to explore.
Once inside you’ll even find a number of electic and colorful old-world, regional toys like the wood-carved kijiuma, hana-te-bako flower boxes or obake no kinta, a toy who’s eyes and tongue flip open when you pull the string. Enjoy a chance to take any of these historic toys up in your own hands and give them a spin.
Shop the line-up of different Kumamoto handcrafts at the first floor “Kogei Shop Takumi”. There’s plenty of regional artisan works to browse, including a number of items made in collaboration with the mascot Kumamon for you to enjoy as a personal momento or bring back as a souvenir or special gift from your trip.
