Onomichi City Museum of Art

A symbolic museum in Senkoji Park, designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando.

Last update :

Located within Senkoji Park, which stretches from the summit to the mid-slope of Mt. Senkoji, the Onomichi City Museum of Art first opened in 1980 and was redesigned in 2003 by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando.

The museum’s philosophy is to present high-quality art across genres and periods, making it a symbolic cultural landmark within Senkoji Park.

Its collection includes works by artists connected to Onomichi, such as Western-style painter Wasaku Kobayashi and Hirata Gyokuen, a female painter born in Onomichi in the late Edo period, as well as pieces by French painter Jules Dupré. In addition to curated exhibitions, the museum also hosts the Onomichi City Art Exhibition, an open-call competition showcasing award-winning and selected works submitted by citizens.

Beyond the exhibition rooms, the first-floor museum shop offers original items and goods inspired by world-famous masterpieces. On the second-floor lobby, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Onomichi Channel and the Seto Inland Sea through large glass windows. The museum also houses a café, providing a relaxing spot to take a break during a visit.
