Shiraito Falls (Yamagata Prefecture)

Shiraito Falls gently slips down the steep cliffs of Mogami Gorge in Tozawa Village, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture. Standing Approx. 124 meters tall, its thin, delicate streams trace the rock face like white threads, which is how the falls got their name. Chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, it is one of the few places where you can experience both elegance and power at once. Behind it, the Mogami River flows calmly, while the breeze through the gorge and the murmur of the river softly envelop visitors’ senses.

You can take in a full view of the waterfall from aboard the Mogami River boat ride (Basho Line Kanko), or admire it from across the river at Shiraito Falls Drive-in. Here, you’ll find dishes made with local ingredients and regional specialties, making it a perfect place for a short break during your trip. In autumn, brilliant foliage adds rich color, while winter brings beautiful snowy scenery reminiscent of an ink wash painting. In spring, snowmelt swells the falls into a more powerful flow, and in summer, the cascade framed by deep greenery offers a refreshing sight.
