Umanose Domon

A miraculous tunnel shaped by rough waves, where nature and history speak to you.

Last update :

A scenic attraction on Jogashima, located at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula in southeastern Kanagawa Prefecture, bordered by Tokyo Bay to the east and Sagami Bay to the west. Rugged rock formations have been hollowed out by marine erosion into a tunnel-like shape, creating a mystical natural beauty that continues to captivate visitors.

Among the areas of Jogashima known for its dramatic terrain, Umanose Domon stands out as an especially striking sight. It has earned two stars and a “worth a visit” rating from one of the world’s most prestigious travel guidebooks. Long affectionately known by locals as “Megane-iwa” or “Spectacles Rock,” this spot is all the more impressive when seen against the grand Pacific scenery around it.

There are two access routes: the eastern route from “Prefectural Jogashima Park” and the western route from the “Jogashima Lighthouse” side. Both can be reached on foot, but the path becomes rocky as you get closer to Umanose Domon, so sturdy, broken-in shoes are recommended. Please note that climbing on top is strictly prohibited due to the risk of collapse.
