Wanko Soba Yabuya Hanamaki Sohonten
Try Hanamaki’s traditional wanko soba at this long-established restaurant once visited by Kenji Miyazawa.
Founded in 1923, “Wanko Soba Yabuya Hanamaki Sohonten” is a well-known restaurant that was also frequented by Kenji Miyazawa, the poet and author of children's stories from Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture, around the time it first opened. Since then, it has preserved its traditional flavors for over 100 years.
Its signature wanko soba comes in three main types: “Wanko Soba (junior high school students and older),” “Kids' Wanko Soba (elementary school students),” and “Little Kids' Wanko Soba (preschool children),” divided by age group. Every wanko soba order includes table service, with empty bowls stacked up in front of you as you finish them. In addition, everyone who orders wanko soba receives a “Big Eater Certificate.” If you finish over 100 bowls, you will also be awarded a “Yokozuna Commemorative Certificate.” Other menu items include the “Kenji Set,” a combination of tempura soba and Mitsuya Cider, both loved by Kenji Miyazawa.
The interior has the atmosphere of a long-established restaurant. There are 200 seats, and private rooms (for a fee) are also available. It can accommodate large groups and tour parties as well. Nearby, you can also visit the “Hanamaki Castle Ruins,” making it easy to enjoy sightseeing along with Hanamaki, Iwate’s distinctive food culture.
