Oyama Senmaida
Japan's only rain-fed rice terraces create beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons.
A beautiful terraced rice field landscape in the mountains of Boso, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields. Stretching across the hills of the Oyama district in Kamogawa City, Oyama Senmaida preserves the traditional scenery of Japan, with 375 rice paddies of various sizes lined up on an Approx. 3.2-hectare slope.
It is also known as a "tensuiden" rain-fed rice terrace, where rice is cultivated using only rainwater with no water source, making it extremely rare even across Japan. From spring planting and summer greenery to golden autumn fields and winter fallow paddies, the scenery changes through the seasons and captivates visitors year-round.
In recent years, the local community has introduced a "Terraced Rice Field Owner Program" and continues activities that foster exchange between urban and rural areas. Through experiences such as rice planting and harvesting, visitors can take part in preserving the terraced fields, helping pass on a sustainable rural culture.
During the annual "Tanada no Akari" event, usually held from late October to early January, 10,000 LED candles illuminate the terraced rice fields and wrap them in magical nighttime light. The view from the observation deck is breathtaking and is highly regarded as a landscape woven together by nature and human activity.
