Sankyozawa Electricity Centennial Hall (Sankyozawa Power Plant)
A museum where you can learn about the history of electricity, attached to a hydropower plant that has been generating power since the Meiji era.
Known as the birthplace of hydropower generation in Japan, Sankyozawa Power Plant began operating in 1888 and is still generating electricity today. Telling the story of this long history is Sankyozawa Electricity Centennial Hall, a museum attached to the plant. Through glass, visitors can observe the generator and waterwheel that have been producing electricity since the Meiji era, and a variety of exhibits introduce the history of electricity and the local natural environment that has supported power generation.
Exhibits on the history of electricity and everyday life explain how electricity spread throughout the Tohoku region, alongside old electrical appliances. Visitors can also see valuable materials, including a display of a replica of the DC generator that first produced electricity in Tohoku. On the second floor, exhibits focus on the water and forests of the Hirose River that have supported the plant’s operation, with plenty of fun ways to learn, such as a digital illustrated guide and a mechanical diorama. From the Water and Forest Terrace, where you can see the conduit pipe that draws water into the plant, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful natural surroundings.
