Daimaru Besso
A long-established ryokan where you can enjoy strolling through a Japanese garden and natural hot spring baths with free-flowing spring water.
This inn stands in historic Futsukaichi Onsen, a hot spring area that has been flowing since the Nara period and was even mentioned in the Manyoshu. Founded in 1865, this long-established ryokan features a vast 6,500-tsubo property with a 3,500-tsubo strolling Japanese garden where you can feel the changing seasons.
The waters of Futsukaichi Onsen are a smooth, gentle alkaline simple hot spring known for leaving your skin silky. The large communal bath, covering over 100 tsubo, has the atmosphere of a hidden hot spring surrounded by trees and is designed in a rock-bath style with rounded stones laid across the bottom. You can fully enjoy the free-flowing spring water straight from the source.
The 41 guest rooms are spread across four buildings: Taishotei (currently closed as of November 2025), Showatei, Heiantei, and Rengyoan, each with its own age and style. Taishotei offers the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese ryokan, while Showatei has a calm, somewhat nostalgic feel. Heiantei includes a living room for a more spacious stay, and Rengyoan, the oldest detached villa, is a special space wrapped in quiet. Each building offers a different sense of time.
Meals are centered on kaiseki cuisine made with seasonal ingredients, and the menu changes monthly. The food is highly regarded, and many guests visit specifically for the dining. They also flexibly accommodate shojin cuisine and celebratory meals.
