Sumaura Sanjo Yuen

A popular destination in Sumaura, Kobe, a scenic area known as the site of the Genpei War. This nature-rich park spread across the mountaintop is packed with attractions for all ages, including spectacular views below, seasonal flowers, and unique rides.

Start by taking the ropeway directly connected to Sanyo Railway’s “Sumaura Koen” Station up to Mt. Hachibuse. From the rooftop of the rotating observation tower, which also has a rare rotating restaurant, you can enjoy sweeping views of the sea of Suma, the cityscape of Kobe, and Awaji Island. One ride you definitely won’t want to miss is the “Carator,” which connects the ropeway mountaintop station and the rotating observation tower (the summit of Mt. Hachibuse). This unusual vehicle can only be found here in all of Japan, and it has become popular for its famously rough ride as it slowly climbs the slope with loud rattling and intense shaking. If you are concerned about motion sickness, you can also skip the Carator and hike to the summit instead. The lift used to travel to Mt. Hatafuri, where the cycle monorail and the Chibikko Plaza are located, also feels refreshingly retro.

It is also famous as a cherry blossom spot. In spring, Approx. 3,200 cherry trees bloom in full glory from Sumaura Park to Sumaura Sanjo Yuen, drawing large crowds of flower viewers.
