Higashi Village Fureai Hirugi Park
A waterfront nature park where you can observe a mangrove forest up close.
Located in Higashi Village in northern Okinawa Main Island, this nature park lets you observe the hirugi (mangrove) forest spreading across the river mouth up close. The park has a walking path, where you can learn about the hirugi rooted in the wetlands and the unique ecosystem of the brackish water area as you stroll.
The walking path that passes through the mangroves is 670 meters round trip and takes about 15 minutes. It is fun to compare the three types of mangroves and look for creatures that live in the hirugi forest as you walk. The park also offers guided canoe experiences, allowing you to view the hirugi forest up close from a perspective near the water's surface. The canoe experience requires advance reservations and takes from 1.5 hours (from 7,000 yen per adult). Reservations are accepted by phone or email.
Admission to the park is free, but donations of any amount are recommended to help maintain and manage the park.
