Located in the Kureha Hills of Toyama City, Toyama Family Park is a nature-rich zoo and popular leisure spot known for exhibits that make use of the satoyama environment. Across its spacious grounds, the zoo mainly keeps and displays animals native to Japan, such as Japanese macaques, Japanese serows, and Japanese black bears. Visitors can also see animals from around the world, including reticulated giraffes, timber wolves, and red pandas, with Approx. 90 species in total. It is especially well known as a rare facility where visitors can observe the Japanese rock ptarmigan, a Special Natural Monument of Japan, year-round.

The park also offers plenty of hands-on events that bring visitors close to the animals, including “Gokkun Time,” where you can watch animals eat while listening to explanations from zookeepers, as well as feeding experiences for giraffes and wolves. With an amusement area, athletic playground, lawn plaza, and boat area, it is an appealing place for families with small children to spend a relaxed full day.

The grounds are also home to wildlife such as Japanese giant flying squirrels, frogs, and dragonflies. Along the nature trails that make use of wooded areas and streams, visitors can experience the satoyama ecosystem and the lives of wild animals up close. It is one of Toyama’s leading family-friendly spots, where nature learning and leisure can be enjoyed at the same time.
