Obasute Station
A scenic station overlooking the Zenkoji Plain and the Chikuma River.
Obasute Station in Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture, is known as one of the most scenic stations on the JR Shinonoi Line. The view is considered one of Japan's three finest train-window views.
Located on a mountainside at an elevation of approximately 1,800 feet, the station's platforms and observation area overlook the Zenkoji Plain, the Chikuma River, and the moonlit rice terraces celebrated as the “Tagoto no Tsuki,” or “Moon Reflected in Each Rice Paddy.” The sweeping daytime scenery and atmospheric nighttime views filled with city lights draw many rail enthusiasts and tourists.
Because the station is located on a steeply graded section of track, it also uses a switchback system, a rarity in Japan. Watching trains arrive and depart while changing direction is a notable sight for rail enthusiasts.
The historic station building, which opened in 1900, was renovated in 2010 while retaining its original character and still has a retro atmosphere. A monument on the platform bears a haiku by Matsuo Basho. Long cherished as a place for viewing the moon, Obasute is one of Shinshu's most celebrated stations.
