The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama

The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama opened in Kamakura in 1951 as Japan's first public museum of modern art. Its third building, the Hayama building, opened in 2003. Located near Isshiki Beach in Hayama, the building was designed around the theme of “sea, mountains, and light.” It features a white exterior that blends with the surrounding nature and a spacious, open interior.

Natural light is skillfully incorporated into the galleries to bring out a different character in each work. The museum mainly holds special and collection exhibitions, presenting high-quality works with a focus on modern and contemporary Japanese art. Sculptures are scattered throughout the garden, allowing visitors to appreciate art while taking a stroll.

The art library, restaurant, and museum shop are available without an admission ticket, making the museum a welcoming cultural facility for the local community. The ocean-view restaurant and courtyard offer tranquil scenery typical of Hayama, providing a relaxing setting alongside the art.
