The Yoshino River Festival, one of the biggest summer events in Gojo City, Nara Prefecture, is a long-running festival held every year on August 15 along the Yoshino River riverbed. Taking place right in the middle of the homecoming season, it draws large crowds from both inside and outside the city and is beloved as Gojo’s liveliest summer tradition. Around 100 food and festival stalls line the venue, filling the riverside area with energy and excitement.

The festival’s biggest highlight is its evening fireworks display, with Approx. 4,000 fireworks launched into the sky. Gojo City is said to be the birthplace of the pyrotechnician Kagiya Yahei, who is believed to have helped lay the foundation of Japan’s fireworks culture, and the show features a style of fireworks production unique to the city. Fireworks synchronized with music and laser lights create a dreamlike scene across the summer night sky. Message fireworks, starmines, and other varied performances make for a spectacular show that never fails to captivate the audience.

Access is also convenient, with the venue about a 10-minute walk from JR Gojo Station. Set along the Yoshino River, long loved for its clear waters, this is a summer festival unique to Gojo City where history and modern production come together.
