A famous castle of Ushu watching over the castle town.

Last update :

A symbol of Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture, known for Kaminoyama Onsen, a hot spring with Approx. 570 years of history. Built during the Sengoku period as a castle guarding the southern defenses of the Mogami clan, it became the stage for battles with the Date and Uesugi clans. In the Edo period, it flourished as the residence of the Kaminoyama Domain and was praised as a “famous castle of Ushu.” It was once dismantled in 1692, and the current castle tower was rebuilt in 1982 as a local history museum. Inside, exhibits introduce the history and culture of Kaminoyama.

From the observation deck on the top floor of the castle tower, visitors can take in panoramic views of central Kaminoyama, the Zao mountain range, and the surrounding peaks. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. Around the castle, samurai residences and Tsukioka Park stretch out, making the area especially famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring. Parts of the moat and stone walls remain at the castle site, offering a glimpse of its former days.

Located within walking distance of JR Kaminoyama Onsen Station, the castle is easy to visit between sightseeing stops. After enjoying a walk through history, consider stopping by the hot spring district to soak in the famous waters and relax after your trip.
