Yusonooka

An urban park developed around the concept of “a hill where nature and people resonate and create together.” Located on high ground about 20 minutes by car from JR Yamagata Station, the park offers a sweeping view of Yamagata City, and on clear days, visitors can see the majestic mountain ranges of Mt. Gassan, Mt. Hayama (Murayama Hayama), and more. With open views and nature that changes with the seasons, it is a relaxing spot for taking a break.

The park features walking paths of about 3.8 km, a lawn area, the Donguri Bridge suspension bridge, a bamboo grove, an orchard, and more. Natural stone walls built by farmers in the past still remain, and a walk through the grounds lets visitors experience Yamagata’s nature-rich satoyama countryside. Scenic viewpoints such as Kando no Oka and Kumomi no Oka are scattered throughout the park, each offering its own atmosphere and view. Yusokan, which has an exhibition room and training rooms, sometimes hosts art exhibitions and events, making it another place to stop by along with a walk through the park.

Every May, the charity event Takenoko Matsuri is held, where freshly made bamboo shoot soup is served free to the first 1,000 visitors. It is an annual event that attracts many visitors each year.

Although located close to the city center, this relaxing spot is surrounded by rich nature and lets visitors spend their time as they wish. Take in the scenery of Yamagata and enjoy a leisurely moment.
