Kaochidani Valley
Magnificent natural formations shaped by columnar jointing in Nabari, Mie.
Kaochidani Valley stretches along the Shorenji River in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture. Also known as the “Yabakei of Kansai,” the valley features exposed columnar-jointed rock faces that look as if they were split with an ax, extending for approximately 5 miles. Striking natural formations such as Tengubashira Rock and Byobu Rock are among its main attractions, while the towering cliffs on both banks of the Shorenji River create a dramatic valley landscape.
In spring, Japanese kerria and azaleas add color to the valley, while in fall, the entire mountainside is covered in foliage that appears to blaze with color. This scenic area is ideal for hikes and drives through landscapes that change with each season, offering impressive views of towering rock walls and a clear-flowing river.
Located within Muro-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park, Kaochidani Valley takes its name from a place name coined by a chief retainer of the Todo family who explored the area during the Edo period. Today, a road follows the Shorenji River, offering views from the car of the valley’s continuous rock walls and changing seasonal scenery.
