The moment I looked down from the observation deck, the layers of snow-white mountains in the distance and the clear azure sky came together to create an absolutely magnificent view. The gassho-style wooden houses in the village, each covered in thick snow, were arranged like little cabins from a fairy tale.

Walking along the village paths through the deep snow, my boots made a solid “crunch” with every step. The air was crisp, dry, and fresh, while sunlight sparkled on the rooftops and icicles. The feeling of actually stepping into this secluded place, carefully sculpted by nature and time, was so deeply moving that words simply cannot describe it.

I’ve been there in spring, summer, and winter, and each season offers completely different scenery and its own special feeling. In spring, everything is fresh and green; in summer, the lush greenery is so soothing; and in winter, it’s covered in snow like a fairy-tale world.

Even though the weather was bad on the day we visited Shirakawa-go, the misty rain made it feel like a small village straight out of a traditional Japanese story.

I completely lost track of time browsing the little shops inside. I’d recommend setting aside at least half a day here, because our tour originally only gave us 1.5 hours, and we almost missed the bus after walking around.
