I finally got to see Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s three most scenic spots, with my own eyes. The view truly lives up to its nickname, “the bridge to heaven” ✨

The weather was beautiful that day. Looking down from the mountaintop observatory, the sea and sky blended together, with the long, narrow sandbar lined with pine trees stretching across the water. It was genuinely moving.

The most unique thing to try here is the “matanozoki” view, where you bend over and look between your legs! They say it makes the scenery look like a flying dragon in the sky. The pose is a little embarrassing, but it’s worth trying for the view.

When I visited in May, it was pretty windy up on the mountain and noticeably chilly, so I recommend bringing a jacket. Taking the cable car up for the view, then slowly strolling around and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, makes this a fantastic day trip near Kyoto!

Amanohashidate has magnificent scenery and is known as one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. Taking in the view from above, or looking at the “Flying Dragon View” upside down, each offers something special. Together with the pine trees and ocean views, it leaves a lasting impression.

We came to Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, because we’d heard so much about it. We ended up arriving during a heavy snowfall, but since we were already there, we decided to make the best of it.

We trudged up to the observatory, and then the snow stopped. The “heavenly dragon,” which had been hidden by clouds and mist, suddenly came into full view. A pure white dragon-like curve stretched out before us...

The silvery white world was so beautiful! We stayed at the observatory for a while, played in the snow, laughed and had such a great time. Then the snow began to fall silently again, so we had to leave reluctantly.

Amanohashidate means 'Bridge to Heaven.' When you look down from the mountains on either side of the sandbar, it really does look like a pathway connecting heaven and earth.

Highly recommend these spots:

☆ Kasamatsu Park:

Take the cable car from Fuchu Station (about 4 minutes) to Kasamatsu Park for a great view of the sandbar. Don't just ride the cable car—be sure to stroll along the pine forest path too!

☆ Looking through your legs:

For over a thousand years, locals have bent over and looked at the bay between their legs to enjoy the most beautiful view. This pose is called 'Matanozoki.' When you're here, try this fun local tradition!

☆ Rotating Bridge:

This bright red bridge rotates 90 degrees to connect Amanohashidate Park. Whenever a boat needs to pass, the bridge turns, lets the boats through, and then rotates back so people can cross again. The whole process takes about 5 minutes—it's really interesting and worth seeing in person!

Took the single-seat cable car up to the observation deck—amazing ocean views all around!

Riding a bike around and enjoying the scenery along the way is a great option.

You can ride the cable car here and even feed the seagulls. Super fun and interesting!
