While looking up attractions in Hakodate, I was surprised to find that Yunokawa Hot Spring was accessible by streetcar, so I planned a little trip there. In addition to hot spring inns, there is a free footbath called “Yumeguri Butai” next to the streetcar stop, where you can stop and soak your feet when you get tired from walking. Nearby Yukura Shrine is also worth a visit. The shrine grounds have an adorable sacred rabbit messenger called “Kami-Usagi,” as well as charmingly designed amulets that are hard not to linger over.

For lunch, I happened to wander into a family-run restaurant called Aoi Shokudo. The simple restaurant was run by a husband and wife, with the news playing on TV, giving it a very local, everyday atmosphere. I unexpectedly ordered tofu in broth with cod milt. The milt was smooth and delicate, with a rich, milky texture that paired especially gently with the tofu, leaving a lasting impression.

Walking into the Trappistine Convent in Hakodate and climbing a short slope, my eyes were immediately drawn to the Lourdes Grotto tucked away beside the trees. A statue of the Virgin Mary dressed in white stands above the grotto, while Bernadette kneels below with her hands clasped and a devout expression, surrounded by rugged stones and lush greenery. The atmosphere felt truly unusual. It was so quiet that I could clearly hear the breeze passing through the leaves. My restless mind instantly slowed down, and I felt deeply peaceful and soothed.

The convent was founded by French nuns, and the red brick Gothic buildings and European-style gardens look as beautiful as a scenic postcard. Every casual photo came out so lovely. That said, besides experiencing this rare tranquility, you absolutely shouldn’t miss the milk soft-serve ice cream sold at the shop by the entrance! The rich milk flavor is incredible, and the texture is extremely smooth. After finishing one, I wanted another. The fresh milk cookies handmade by the nuns are also perfect for picking up a couple of boxes as souvenirs. Taking a stroll through the solemn and beautiful convent and ending the visit with an incredibly rich soft-serve ice cream makes for a slightly romantic and satisfying outing. I sincerely recommend adding it to your Hakodate itinerary!

Yunokawa Onsen is just about a 5-minute drive from Hakodate Airport, and there are buses that go straight there too. Getting here is really easy!

After seeing the night view in Hakodate, I stayed at a local Yunokawa Onsen ryokan and really enjoyed soaking in the hot springs. You can even see the famous monkeys bathing in the hot springs nearby! I love coming here—the water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring, which is said to help with nerve pain, muscle aches, and fatigue. Highly recommend!
