What attracted me most to Katsuo-ji Temple in Osaka was all the “victory daruma dolls.” From the entrance all the way into the temple grounds, you can see adorable daruma dolls of different sizes everywhere. Their bright red appearance is very distinctive, and I couldn’t stop taking photos with my phone.

Katsuo-ji Temple is located in the mountains, and the entire area is very peaceful. Walking through the temple grounds, you can really feel the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese temple. Besides worshiping, the gardens, ponds, and mountain scenery along the way are also beautiful, and it’s especially pleasant to walk around when the weather is nice.

What I found most interesting was that daruma dolls were placed all over the temple. Some were on shelves, some were hidden in corners, and you could even find them in tiny spaces. It felt like a little game of searching for daruma dolls, with surprises everywhere as you explored.

This trip to Katsuo-ji Temple wasn’t just about worshiping; it was also a very soothing walk through the mountains and forest. Looking at all the daruma dolls made me feel as though I was taking “victory luck” and good fortune home with me. No wonder it has become such a popular and distinctive attraction in Osaka!

I originally thought Katsuo-ji Temple was one of those remote attractions deep in the mountains of Japan that takes a long, strenuous journey to reach. But after actually going there, I found it wasn't that difficult at all! Take the Midosuji Line all the way to the last stop, M06 Minoh-kayano, and you can transfer directly to a nonstop bus to Katsuo-ji Temple right outside the station. The ride takes about 21 minutes and is smooth all the way.

The scenery at the temple is beautiful, and practically every corner is photogenic. Almost every attraction along the way has a multicolor stamp postcard you can stamp. This is very family-friendly. Just tell the kids, “You can get another stamp at the next stop,” and they instantly perk up and keep walking, so you don't have to worry about them constantly asking, “How much farther?”

The biggest downside to Katsuo-ji Temple is that the daruma dolls and souvenirs all make you want to buy them. It's way too hard on the wallet.

As soon as you ride deep into the mountains and arrive at the temple gate, the cool mountain breeze immediately sweeps away the summer heat.

Katsuo-ji Temple has long been known as the "Temple of Winning Luck," and many people come here specifically to pray for success in exams, careers, competitions, or life's many challenges. The most striking and soothing sight when you enter the grounds is the thousands upon thousands of red prayer daruma of all sizes, known as "winning daruma," packed into every corner of the temple. Whether tucked into cracks in stone walls, at the roots of trees, or beside the temple approach, these round red figures are everywhere you look. Seeing them lined up in rows is both spectacular and a little cute.

Especially in summer, although there are no cherry blossoms or maple leaves, the temple grounds are surrounded by lush greenery and forest. Walking along the stone steps and beside the pond, you can not only breathe in the refreshing forest air but also see the cute daruma against the verdant mountain scenery, creating a unique summer view. There is also a beautiful Kannon pond and garden on the grounds, making for a very leisurely and relaxing stroll.

If you're visiting Osaka and want to plan a spiritually uplifting and soothing half-day trip outside the city, I highly recommend adding Katsuo-ji Temple in summer to your itinerary. Here, you can not only write down your wish and take home your own winning daruma, but also enjoy a perfectly cool and sacred time in the lush green mountains!

So many people have posted about Katsuo-ji Temple. I was pretty lucky to visit on a rainy day. I'd seen tons of photos online of the temple on sunny days, but none in the rain. I originally planned to head back down after two hours, but ended up spending four hours there. It's so photogenic, and the souvenir shop has lots of tempting things to buy. If you get the chance, go on a rainy day (though that's way too hard to plan). Definitely buy a daruma—don't hesitate, because it's really far to go back again.
