Listening to the clear sound of bells carried on the breeze and looking down from the nearby higher ground, you can not only feel the strong international atmosphere but also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding streets.

I highly recommend including the Hakodate Orthodox Church in your walking route around Motomachi. Whether you’re admiring the beautiful Russian-style Western architecture or enjoying a leisurely historical walk, it will add an elegant visual experience to your trip!

Passing by at night, I was deeply drawn to its elegant Western-style architecture and stopped without realizing it to admire it. Since it was just before Christmas, there were still activities going on inside the church. The warm, dim lighting illuminated the historic building, adding a solemn yet cozy holiday atmosphere. That evening, I was on my way to take the ropeway to see Hakodate's night view and briefly stopped in front of the church. Unfortunately, the winter night was simply too cold to stay long, so I had to move on quickly.

I visited here a few winters ago. The church covered in snow looked especially solemn and sacred.

This is a great example of Western-style architecture in Hakodate. It’s now designated as an important cultural property.
