Sobadokoro Tenan

Conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the Miyazaki Kotsu Takachiho Bus Center, Sobadokoro Tenan is a must-visit spot for soba lovers. Using locally sourced soba flour from Takachiho, the restaurant hand-grinds it on a stone mill and serves it as handmade ni-hachi soba, renowned for its rich aroma and smooth texture.

The handmade soba noodles are so fragrant, with a chewy and layered texture. The broth is light and not too salty, and I felt super satisfied after eating. The atmosphere inside is simple and warm—it's the kind of little place you'd want to come back to!

Nakatsu Castle

Built at a strategic location at the mouth of the Nakatsu River, it is the oldest modern castle in Kyushu, a water castle (sea castle) that utilizes seawater drawn into the moat. Along with Imabari Castle and Takamatsu Castle, it is considered one of the "Three Great Water Castles of Japan. "

Kinrin Lake

Kinrin Lake is one of many popular tourist spots in the hot springs town of Yufuin. The lake sits under Mt. Yufu and as such was called takemoto-no-ike (lit. “lake under the mountain”) for years. However, it was renamed to Kinrin, or “golden scales”, by Mori Kuso in 1884 when he saw the golden glimmering scales of fish as they swam at sunset.

There are some small tea houses and cafes by the lake where you can enjoy a cup of tea while taking in the view. There are also walking paths around the lake, so you can stroll along the shore, admire the scenery, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

The National Museum of Western Art

The museum is located in the lush Ueno Park and, as its name suggests, specializes in Western art. The museum is based on "the Matsukata Collection," which was donated and returned by the French government. The French art collection includes paintings by Impressionists such as Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso and sculptures by Rodin.

Sankyo Soko

This earthen storage for rice is in Sakata, once a lively port city where rice was shipped out. Sakai Family, the former domain lord, built 14 storehouses in 1893. 12 of them are standing today. 9 of the 12 were still used up until the end of 2022 to store 10,800 tons of rice, designated in 2021 as a national historic site.

It started as Japan's second largest public art museum, Tairei Kinen Kyoto Art Museum, that commemorated then-emperor's enthronement, then the name was changed to Kyoto City Art Museum. In spring of 2020 after a renovation, it was reopened as Kyoto City Kyocera Art Museum.

Shimogamo Shrine (Kamomioya-jinja)

The official name of the Shrine is Kamomioya-jinja. Due to its location downstream of the Kamo River that runs through Kyoto City, it is familiarized by the name “Shimogamo-san” and “Shimogamo Shrine.” The main shrine, consisting of two buildings in the east and west, is designated as a national treasure, and is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. It was also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
