Hoheikyo Onsen

Hoheikyo Onsen is the only hot spring in Sapporo where the spring water is poured directly into the bathtub. This 100% free-flowing hot spring, in which the temperature is not controlled and water is not added, is rare even in Japan, a country with a large number of hot springs. It is popular as a hot spring where one can expect the same efficacy as that of the spring water.

Yagiyama Zoological Park Fujisaki no Mori

“Yagiyama Zoological Park Fujisaki no Mori" is one of the largest zoos in Tohoku, housing approximately 600 animals of 115 species, including endangered species. Located in the neighborhood of Aobayama, where the ruins of Sendai Castle are located, the zoo is loved by locals and tourists alike for its easy accessibility (12 minutes by subway from Sendai Station, right off the Yagiyama Zoological Park Station) and for its diverse species of mammals, birds, and reptiles that can be observed.

Yagiyama Zoological Park in Sendai is thoughtfully designed. You can even see cute animal paintings on the subway station walls. Japanese zoos really put a lot of care into their planning.

JR Kanazawa Station

Kanazawa Station, the gateway to Ishikawa, is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, which opened in 2015. It connects Tokyo and Kanazawa in about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and serves as the starting point for sightseeing in Kanazawa and the Hokuriku region.

The former Iwasaki House Garden

The Iwasaki Family founded Mitsubishi. These buildings and garden were built in 1896 as a residence for Hisaya, Iwasaki Family’s third head, and were later restructured as Tokyo’s garden. The 12-acre premises used to have 20 buildings. Today, the western-style hall, the Japanese-style hall, the pool hall and the garden are preserved.

The first-floor veranda of the Western-style building at the Former Iwasaki House Garden has a Tuscan vibe, while the columns on the second floor are in the Greek Ionic style. You can really feel the greatness and taste of European architecture here!

Omiya Hachimangu Shrine

Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, a war lord in the Heian Period, built Omiya Hachimangu in 1063. It is one of the three big shrines of Musashi Province. Hachiman Okami (Emperor Onin) and his two children are enshrined as deities to bless with safe childbirth and parenting. Located at Tokyo’s center, it is called the “Belly Button of Tokyo,” popular as a spiritual spot.

Koshiki Shinto is a belief system that emerged spontaneously in Japan from ancient times-founded in 1882 in Kanda, Tokyo, to revive the ancient Shinto tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times. Unlike the "Nirei-Nihakushu-Ichirei" used by most Shinto shrines, the official way of worship is "Nirei-Shihakushu-Ichirei" (two bows, four-beat, one bow).

Every year from late February to early March, I come to Sakura Jingu to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms in full bloom. I also tie pink wish ribbons on the trees. I highly recommend visiting this spot!

Yuge no Sho Seaweed-salt-making Experience

Since Japan is not blessed with salt resources such as rock salt or salty lakes, salt has been produced from seawater using various salt-making methods since ancient times. The calm Seto Inland Sea has long daylight and little rainfall, thus, many islands became famous for salt production.

The seaweed salt from Kamagari in Hiroshima is the best and most famous, so I came here to try making it myself at the beachside hut. It was awesome!

Sobe-Gama Tobo (Pottery) Dodo, Clay-Molding Experience

The potter, Sonosuke Furukawa, runs a workshop/gallery - Kobo Dodo - at the western corner of Yuge Island overlooking the ocean. He studied one of Japan’s 6 major ancient potteries, Bizen ware in Okayama, then he returned to his hometown, Yuge Island, to open his business.

At Sobe-Gama Tobo Dodo, you can try making your own pottery by hand. It's a great way to create a unique souvenir from your island trip. Totally worth it!
