Hizen Hamashuku Sakagura-dori

Hizen Hamazhuku, located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, is an area that originally boomed during the Edo and Meiji eras for its sake and soy sauce production. It’s sake brewing in particular is said to have flourished since ancient times due to a trifecta, pure waters that flow from the Taradake mountain range, delicious rice from the Shiroishi Plain, and its access to shipping ports in Nagasaki via the Ariake Sea.

Dakigaeri Valley

Dakigaeri Valley stretches for 10 km along the middle course of the Tamagawa River, which flows between Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate. It is said to be named after an old and narrow treacherous mountain path, which was so narrow that when two people met, they had to embrace each other to pass.

Dakigaeri Valley is truly beautiful. Walking slowly along the trail, you're surrounded by greenery and clear streams the entire way. It's worth visiting in any season. The trail is easy and not tiring, and the air is very fresh, making you want to slow down.

Lake Tazawa

Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan at 423.4m deep. The lake, with its breathtakingly beautiful cobalt blue surface, is a scenic spot in Akita Prefecture, selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan. In 2022, the moon rising over Lake Tazawa will be recognized as one of Japan's 100 Most Beautiful Moons, adding even more charm to the lake.

The water of Lake Tazawa is clear and beautiful, with the deep blue surface reflecting like a mirror and mountains surrounding it. Taking your time around the lakeshore to see the Statue of Tatsuko and the natural scenery is very relaxing. It's a place worth lingering to experience the charm of Akita.

Oirase Stream

Oirase Stream, a renowned tourist attraction awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide, stretches approximately 14 kilometers from the shores of Lake Towada at Nenokuchi to Yakeyama. It's a national Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, celebrated for its waterfalls, clear streams, giant rocks, and steep cliffs.

Oirase Stream is beautiful even without the fall foliage. It's a great place to escape the summer heat, with beautiful scenery all along the walking trail. It's well worth a visit, and the air here feels especially fresh. It's definitely a wonderful spot in Tohoku that shouldn't be missed.

Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari

The African Safari is the largest safari park in Japan where around 1400 animals of 70 species roam freely in its enormous area. The park is divided into two zones; the “Animal Zone” with its 6km safari road where visitors can get close to the animals from the “jungle bus” and the “Interacting Zone” where visitors can actually touch the animals.

Be sure to get there early to line up for the jungle bus! The large animals roam freely outdoors, and the jungle bus lets you see them up close and even feed them. It's a very special experience! The bus driver gave a very cheerful commentary along the way, and the kids had a great time.

Mt. Hakodate Observatory

The Mt. Hakodate Observatory is the final stop of Mt. Hakodate Ropeway. The first floor features an inside lounge, the Ryoubi Park popular among locals as a less-crowded area to enjoy the night sceneries. The second floor features a summit shop, and restaurant selling Mt. Hakodate original goods. The third floor features a tea lounge, and the fourth floor features an observatory lounge.

This world-famous million-dollar night view was also featured in a Detective Conan movie. We were lucky to have perfect weather, and the view was absolutely stunning. Mt. Hakodate is freezing on winter nights, but this view makes it totally worth it.

Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley)

One of Noboribetsu’s most popular tourist destinations, Jigokudani is the remains of a volcanic crater formed by the eruption of Mount Hiyoriyama. The valley, which spans about 450 meters in diameter and covers approximately 11 hectares, is still geothermally active. It serves as the main source for the renowned Noboribetsu Onsen, which boasts an impressive daily output of 10,000 tons of hot spring water.

In winter, you can see white steam rising from the snow at Noboribetsu Jigokudani, which is truly unique. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the strong sulfur scent. The volcanic landscape and constantly rising steam create a spectacular sight.

A leisurely walk along the trail lets you experience the power of nature up close. It’s definitely a must-visit spot in Hokkaido.

Yutoku Inari Shrine

This shrine is one of Japan’s great Inari shrines along with Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto and Kasama Inari Shrine in Ibaraki. In 1687, Hizen Kajima Domain's lord, Nabeshima Naotomo, was marrying Kazanin Manko-hime from Kyoto, when she requested the deity, Inari Okami, who the imperial court offered prayers to, to be imparted and this shrine was built.

You have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the main hall. When I visited, the stairs were decorated with lots of little wind chimes, which were adorable. Farther up, there’s a long row of red torii gates that creates a distinctly Japanese atmosphere. It’s a wonderful place to pray for good fortune, take photos, and appreciate the beauty of Japanese culture.

Unzen Jigoku (the Hells of Unzen)

Unzen Jigoku, a main highlight of the Unzen hot springs. The scenery of cloudy white steams with the smell of sulfur looks just like hell.

Walking along the trail, you can admire the steam vents and rocky scenery—it’s both impressive and fascinating. You can also try hot spring–cooked eggs. This natural attraction is well worth a visit.

Kinrin Lake

Kinrin Lake is one of many popular tourist spots in the hot springs town of Yufuin. The lake sits under Mt. Yufu and as such was called takemoto-no-ike (lit. “lake under the mountain”) for years. However, it was renamed to Kinrin, or “golden scales”, by Mori Kuso in 1884 when he saw the golden glimmering scales of fish as they swam at sunset.

Kinrin Lake is beautiful, with crystal-clear water. I’ve visited in both summer and fall, and while the scenery was different, it was equally stunning. Sometimes the lake is blanketed in morning mist, creating a dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere. It’s a must-see in Yufuin and well worth exploring at a leisurely pace.
